In Search of Excellence: Top Indonesian Student at Singapore NTU ended his life tragically

Nanyang Technological University of Singapore is one of the top world’s research univerity that recently has made progress equalling to MIT or Harvard University of the USA. It recruits top students from all over the world to study at the university by giving good amount of scholarship. It is well known as a great global university founded on science and technology. Nurturing creative and entrepreneurial leaders through a broad education in diverse environment.

Pushing students to reach their top performance is a good strategy to obtain successful graduates that will be successful in their future careers. However, pushing them beyond their normal capabilities may cause stress and mental stability that may result in unexpected acts by some students that no longer bear the heavy stresses.

This could be the cause of the tragedy involving an Indonesian top student, DHW, whos scholarship was terminated one monrh ago for unknown reason. He then had argument with his professor that ended with the stabbing of the professor by the student. He then decided to commit suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of the NTU building.

We can now wisely take a lesson from this tragedy. It is no use to push student to top performance through methods beyonds their normal capabilities, without carefully monitoring the effect to the behaviour of the students.

Let us carefully reconsider mehiods used in each of our university campuses, if we have done the best educational process to get the best output of our students for their best future careers.
